Composites

I’ve finally started going through the rest of the photos from this summer — in all I snapped over 4000 images and liked over 1500! That’s a pretty good haul. And some of them were awarded three-or-more stars in my reviewing process — not an easy feat. You can see what I’ve posted so far in my UK and Greece galleries.

Some were great images except for one major flaw — like the light in the wrong place, a washed-out sky, or some other detail that made an otherwise solid image into something I would usually disregard. I decided that some of these had potential and that I could give them new life via Photoshop.

So, I choose a few and started playing with some composites: a combination of two or more images into one final photograph. For example, one of my favorites is “The Tor Fantasy” (see the example below); the photo of the Tor was great, but the sky was all washed out and the Tor was too dark because I was facing into the sun. An easy way to fix this is to bring it into black and white, or play with the levels to bring out the missing contrasts and colors. Yet, I felt the photo could be better, so I added a star field and a dramatic sunset — this is version 1 below. In version 2, I used a more natural-looking sunny clouds photo — in the actual position to throw that long shadow on the grass, and I put a canvas texture over the whole thing. The original shot can be found in my Glastonbury gallery. Which do you like best?

All of the others have some combination of composite love. I think this fits nicely with my pastiche idea.

OK, technically “Sunset in the West Country” is not a composite, but it was so heavily tweaked in Photoshop, that I include it in this bunch. All of the images above and some more that are not composites now have their own gallery. Hopefully one I’ll be adding to in the weeks to come.

The following display is from the new service called Glossom. Hover over each of the images for expanded views. Check out my other collections.
