For the fall colors, that is. Even though the day wasn’t ideal for a portrait shoot (the sun was totally absent), we knew the rain was coming, so we decided to try to capture some of the fall colors for they disappeared for another year. I wasn’t optimistic, but we managed to get a few that I really like.

We started at this spot along my running route, but ended back in front of our house. Yes, our street — Hines Terrace — might be one of the prettiest in Macon this time of year. I know I’m a bit biased, but it really is hard to beat. Check out last year’s shots, and the previous year’s.

All shots that used a flash — which was most — the flash was off-camera; see the equipment list below. Most times, I positioned the flash 90° from the model, to get a dramatic lighting effect, like the sun setting. Sometimes this produces shadows that are a bit harsh, but had I the time (and energy), I could have compensated with a second flash. Still, I’m frequently amazed at what you can accomplish with just one strobe when you take it off-camera.

Ever since our successful photoshoot last spring (and one before that), Heidi and I have been meaning to repeat the experience. Last Sunday finally afford us a last-minute opportunity. I say “last minute” because we didn’t get started until after four, and the fall light doesn’t last long past six. Still, we had a couple of hours, but I wasn’t really optimistic that we’d get much that would be good.

I’m happy to report, I was wrong. In fact, this shoot was better than the spring one. I’m a better photographer, and Heidi seemed more relaxed working with me. We began in Lanier and Anderson Parks, just off of High Street in downtown Macon. The sun was setting, and I wanted to capture the moment without artificial light, so I used my trusty (and favorite) 85mm f/1.2. That combo worked well, so we went to the top of a parking garage off of Cherry to watch the sun really set and use some of that syrupy light.

Finally, we went to the Rookery for a beer and a few more photos. After — it was now dark — I used my strobe off-camera in the alley, like I did for the shots in the Rookery. This was a bit challenging, and something I want to practice with more. I didn’t get as many shots here, but those I did are pretty dramatic.

While we had several Foto Friday shoots scheduled, only one actually flew. And we did it only because the students who attended asked me to do it. I’m glad they did.

I love to shoot in Regents Park. Heck, I just like to be in Regents Park. It truly is one of my favorite places in London. Today’s shoot was no exception. It was sunny and beautiful, and I finally go to use the two strobes I hauled with me from Georgia. Noel brought hers along, too, so we got to shoot the whole day with three flashes, something I’ve never really done before.

It turned out well, as is evident by the results.

There were four students who came to model, and I talked Noel into posing a couple of times, too. My students took turns modeling; otherwise, they were holding the lights. This system worked incredibly well — so much so, that I’m gonna hire three assistants for each photo gig from now on. (OK, no I’m not.)

It’s that time of year again. Spring means two things for central Georgia: the Cherry Blossom festival and pollen. While the latter is not something I look forward to, the former is. It’s Macon’s most famous pagan festival of rebirth under the Yoshino trees in full pink.

Of course this means we have to try to get some photos. The cherry blossoms seemed a bit less pink this year, but there were plentiful. I grabbed my favorite model, and we headed out for a couple of shots in the late afternoon sun.

Before coming home for a visit — she moved to Brooklyn a few months ago — Heidi contacted me about a photo shoot. I readily agreed, since our last session was so fruitful.

We met last Saturday, and sped off to a couple of locations near downtown Macon. We stopped at a couple of places and had a couple of wardrobe changes — well, Heidi had a couple; I wore the same thing. I think the selection of images we achieved this time are excellent — just the stuff for a new model’s portfolio.
