Customizing your Apple menu

How many times have you changed your Apple menu? What? Didn’t know you could? Let us show you how!

One of the MacOS's greatest strengths is its ability to customize. The Apple menu is a great example of this. While the Apple menu is filled with default items when a System is first installed, it's up to the computer's user to decide what should go there. "Ahhh," I hear you saying, "but what SHOULD go there?"

Well, whatever you want, however you would like to arrange it. Below is a screenshot of Gerald's Apple menu:

He's arranged things like applications and links into easy-to-access folders. Notice the triangles on the right-hand side of the menu? Those mean that a submenu is available with additional information or choices. In this case, all of the items in Gerald's menu have submenus. He's also chosen to take advantage of Apple's "recently used..." items, near the bottom of the menu.

By contrast, look at Giles' menu:

While the overall style is similar to Gerald's, most of the details are different. I've chosen to arrange it differently, each of the submenus contains different information (compared to Gerald's), and I don't use the "recently used..." items, mostly for security. (Instead, I use the excellent ActionFiles open and save dialog-enhancing utility. Stay tuned for a full review and tip session.)

How do you want to arrange your Apple menu? The sky's the limit. To add, change, or delete an item, open the Apple Menu Items folder inside the System folder. Note how an alias of a folder creates a submenu. Note also that submenus can be nested, which is to say that a submenu can have submenus. Simply add an alias of your favorite folder, including your Documents folder.

Bonus hint-within-a-hint: if you'd like to force things to appear at the top of the list, in spite of alphabetical order,
