ENC 1101 In-Class Essay #1

Directions for the Essay

You will have 50 minutes to plan, write, and proofread an essay on one of the topics below. Read the topics carefully to make sure you know what they are asking you to do.

Topic 1:

An influencial movie

Topic 2:

A television show that should not be cancelled

Topic 3:

A band that has a positive message

Read the three topics and select the one on which you wish to write your essay. In order for your essay to be scored, it must be on only one of these topics, and it must address the entire topic.

In your essay, you should introduce the subject and then either:

  • explain the subject you have chosen, or
  • take a position about your subject and support it.

Your essay will be evaluated to determine if you have:

  • addressed the topic as written,
  • ethablished a clear thesis or main idea,
  • developed your thesis logically and in sufficient detail,
  • used well-formed sentences and paragraphs,
  • used language appropriately and effectively, and
  • followed standard practices in spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.

Take a few minutes to think about what you want to say before you start writing. Leave yourself a few minutes at the end of the period to proofread and make corrections.

While I prefer your using the computer for your exam, you may choose to handwrite it. If handwriting, you may cross out and add information as necessary, but do it neatly. Although your handwriting will not affect your score, you should write as legibly as possible, on every other line, and on one side of the page only.

You may create an informal outline or plan, but it will not be scored. Only your essay will be graded.
