ENGL 3106: Professional Comm

Fall, 2002
Monday, 5:30-8:00 pm, Room D205

Prerequisite: At least a “C” in ENGL 1102

This course proposes to develop and strengthen your skills in effective business and professional communication in both written and oral modes. This course will increase your ability to write direct and lucid prose and will introduce you to some of the kinds of writing typically used in business and professional situations. Teaching/learning methods will include reading, close analyses of business and professional documents, in-class writing and oral exercises, brief lectures, informal and formal writing assignments, and both individual and group projects. Professional Communication is very much a laboratory class; we shall spend much of our time writing and editing each other’s work. Through class meetings and out-of-class preparations, you should expect to accomplish the following learning objectives:

  1. Understand the process of communication from the positions of receiver and sender in a variety of business and professional contexts.
  2. Apply specific intellectual, practical, and ethical business communication principles to the composition, production, and delivery of typical business and professional messages and documents.
  3. Enhance awareness of communication contexts and practices in other cultures.
  4. Practice business communication skills in both independent and collaborative/team situations.
