ENL 3273: British Literature 1900-1945Course Requirements |
Your final grade will be based on the following categories:
Class ParticipationRegular class attendance and active participation in classroom discussion and the class interchanges are required. Some assignments will occasionally count for participation: quizzes, peer editing, the viewing of a film, and like activities. Additional assistance can be obtained from the instructor during his office hours or by appointment. Your participation in group activities both in-class and at a distance will be weighed heavily in evaluation. Since writing is an on-going process, participation, effort, and attitude will count as much as written work. Various forms of electronic discourse will be utilized by the class. Participation in LitMUSE meetings and Littalk interchanges will be required. Specific assignments dealing with each of these activities will be prompted by the instructor, usually in class. While we will complete much of our computer work in-class, the use of a computer out-of-class is manditory for the successful completion of this class. USF provides open-use computer labs, but I suggest your buying a computer, if you do not already have one. You will need to use a computer for this class daily; if you do not have easy access to one, you should consider taking another class. For every assigned reading, a quiz should be expected. These quizzes are designed to test factual aspects of the text, not interpretation or evaluation. Read every text carefully and take reading notes character names, general plot, important items, etc. and the quizzes will be no problem. Quizzes, other class activities, and homework assignments will be factored in to class participation. Class ProjectThe class project will be the development of an interactive version of Eliots The Waste Land on LitMUSE. See the project description for detailed information. In addition to looking for thoroughness and insight, I will be looking for a clearly stated main idea and ample evidence to support this main idea. I will also expect this project to be free of grammatical and spelling errors. ExamsThree in-class exams will be given, see schedule for specific dates. These exams will test students knowledge of the subject matter, their ability to synthesize this material, and their creativity in going beyond the discussion and lecture materials. Exams will include vocabulary, identification, and interpretation. All exam grades will be based upon thoroughness, depth of insight, precision, and originality. These exams will be written in-class, on the word processor of your choice. All three exams will constitute 40% of the final grade. |
