Choose one topic below:
- In one-and-a-half to two typed pages (no more or less), discuss the view of love in Perfume. That is, how does Grenouille’s perception of love correspond with our general understanding of love? Is love a spiritual understanding or a sensual gratification? Relate your discussion to the novel’s final scene. Be sure to support your observations with specific evidence form the text.
- What are the implications of having no odor to a man whose whole conception of reality is based on scent? That is, Grenouille’s reality is constituted solely by olfactory perceptions--those smells are all he knows or understands; yet, Grenouille has no distinct smell of his own. Can we relate in any way to Grenouille’s predicament? Discuss these questions in one-and-a-half to two typed pages (no more or less), and be sure to support your observations with specific evidence form the text.
Also, using an Internet search engine, find a site that addresses Perfume or Patrick Süskind in general and post the URL to the listserv. If you cannot find a site that has not already been posted to the listserv, look at one of the sites already posted and write a paragraph critique of it on the listserv.
