Part 1: Standard dictionaries define for the general reader (non-technical), whereas specialized reference books define for the specialist (highly technical). Choose an item in your field and copy the definition (1) from a standard dictionary and (2) from a technical reference book. Rewrite the specialized definition for a general reader.
Part 2: Select a device you use everyday (the simpler the better) and write an objective description of it (see Lannon 421 for a guide). Include all necessary visuals (you must have at least one). Target a non-technical audience in your description. Remember, you are simply describing the item, its parts, and its function: do not provide directions for its assembly or operation.
