Parodies of Love and Life


"The Flea," by John Donne, and "To His Coy Mistress," by Andrew Marvell, voice the carpe diem view of love and sex, while Shakespeare's "Sonnet 116" expresses the facts of true love. Donne and Marvell were correct in their sieze-the-day attitude, but sex should be reserved for the true love that Shakespeare addresses. Through an analysis of "The Flea," "To His Coy Mistress," and "Sonnet 116," I hope to understand the roles that these different views play in real life.
