ENC 2210 Basic Technical Writing

DESCRIPTION: ENC 2210, Basic Technical Writing, teaches students skills they will need as professionals. Since this section of Tech Writing will utilize computer and information technologies, a basic knowledge of computers is expected from all students prior to entering the class. Students will complete individual work and collaborative projects common to the workplace, such as proposals, résumés, business letters, memos, instruction phamphlets, product descriptions, progress reports, and feasibility reports. Emphasis will be given to purpose and audience.

This section of ENC 2210 meets in the English Department's computer classroom, CPR-202. The object of this section is to familiarize the student with various new approaches to instruction and communication, emphasizing pragmatic and theoretical concerns in the process. The computers will assist the instructor, but in no way attempt to replace him; they are tools that will help with efficiency, variety, and practicality in the instruction and learning of Basic Technical Writing. It should also be noted that this class is not a computer class, but an English class; writing is still our primary concern. The computer instruction will be limited to the applications utilized by the class.

REQUIREMENTS: As a Gordon Rule course, ENC 2210 will require the writing of 6000 words. The students will maintain an online, hypertext portfolio of course assignments that will be evaluated twice during the semester. Written assignments, out-of-class work, class participation, and a professional attitude is expected from all students. There will be a final exam based on assigned reading, lecture, and discussion, and an oral presentation of the students' portfolios.
