2.2.5 Additional Software

Setting up the student accounts can be time-consuming depending on what kind of software you need installed. I recommend configuring one student environment, then copying it to all of the other accounts. this way, you only need to set up one GUI environment for all of the accounts on your LAN. Generally, most of the Internet software your students will need already comes packaged with Red Hat 7.0, including Netscape Navigator and the Gimp. Additional software your students might need, like a productivity suite or a MOO client, should be installed on the server, since the server’s /usr/local volume will be available to all of the workstations. Most software should be installed in the /usr/local directory, so installing additional software on the server also installs it on the client machines, with only a few exceptions. Every software package my students and instructors need is available free-of-cost, including:

Sun’s StarOffice

A full-featured office suite.

AbiWord

A clean little word processor.

TkMOO

A small MOO client program.

The Gimp

A Photoshop-like graphics and picture editor.

Depending on your needs, you have several places to look for software. two of the best are Sourceforge (http://www.sourceforge.net/) and Freshmeat (http://freshmeat.net/). If you can’t find what you’re looking for there, you might try a general keyword search on your favorite search engine.
