Introduction

In an effort to answer as accurately and as consistently as possible certain questions that continually pop up in the teaching of Freshmen Composition, we have decided to construct a FAQ that addresses as lucidly and succinctly these very questions. We did not arbitrarily pick these questions. They are based on our observations of problems that seem indicative of college freshmen writing competence, and the questions that the students themselves ask most frequently, both in conferences and writing.

This selection of Frequently Asked Questions is intended for neophyte college writers. Some of our colleagues have expressed concern that our answers to some of these complex questions are too sophomoric and that we make assertions that are not always true. We would be the first ones to agree. However, our intention is to make the teaching of Freshmen Composition as easy as possible for the student as well as for the instructor and not to supply the definitive grammatical lexicon.

Since we are interested in the clearest, most pithy answers that we can find, we encourage teachers with more experience and/or creativity to share their pedagogical insights on these matters with us. We will gladly acknowledge your contribution in a future edition.
